TOUR WEST WRITERS RETREAT

Writing YOUR Wild: Finding Your Voice in the Desert

MORE THAN A RIVER TRIP

The Tour West Writers Retreat is an invitation to experience the canyon at a slower pace—to trade the noise and distractions of everyday life for the sound of the Colorado River, wide-open skies, canyon walls, good conversation, and a little time to think.

With author Sean Prentiss, author of Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave, joining us as our Featured Writer and Literary Host, this special trip brings together adventure, storytelling, writing, history, and the incredible landscapes of southeastern Utah.

You don’t need to consider yourself a writer to join us. You simply need to be curious.

Whether you love to write, enjoy listening to a good story, or have never written anything beyond a grocery list, you’ll be invited to participate in ways that feel comfortable and enjoyable.

SEAN PRENTISS

Sean Prentiss is the award-winning author of Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave, which won the National Outdoor Book Award, Utah Book Award, and the New Mexico-Arizona Book Award, and the author of Crosscut: Poems. He has also written two textbooks, Environmental and Nature Writing and Advanced Creative Nonfiction.

He serves as a professor of writing at Norwich University. When he’s not writing and teaching, Sean is often in the outdoors. He has led trail crews across the West, including in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, and he did adventure guiding through Dark Canyon, in Utah.  He grew up paddling on the Delaware River. He and his family live on a small lake in northern Vermont.

While Sean brings a deep connection to Edward Abbey, environmental writing, poetry, creative nonfiction, and the landscapes of the Southwest, this workshop is not just about trying to write like Abbey. The goal is for each participant to discover something uniquely their own. Through writing, conversation, and time in the wilderness, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your own experiences, perspectives, and voice, and perhaps leave with a story you didn’t know you had to tell.

BEFORE THE RIVER:  May 10, 2027

A HALF Day in Arches National Park

Our Writers River experience begins in Moab with a half day exploring Arches National Park.

Before we ever launch the boats, we’ll spend a day getting acquainted with the desert landscape that surrounds us.

Sean will share stories and insights connected to Edward Abbey, Finding Abbey, the history of the American West, and the powerful relationship between writers and the places that inspire them.

There will be time to take photographs, ask questions, and simply enjoy the scenery.

Tour West will handle transportation and the logistics for the day. Accommodations this night included in the trip rate. Check-in after the Arches Tour.

ON THE COLORADO RIVER:  May 11, 2027

Four Nights in Cataract Canyon

On Tuesday morning, 8 am, we’ll head toward the river and begin our four-night Cataract Canyon adventure.

For the next several days, the river becomes our road.

We’ll travel through dramatic canyon country, surrounded by towering walls, colorful rock formations, side canyons, desert landscapes, and a constantly changing view around every bend.

Some moments will be exciting and full of whitewater. Others will be wonderfully quiet.

There will be time to explore, hike when opportunities arise, enjoy camp, write, listen, talk, and simply take in where we are.

Because we’re traveling in a natural environment, the schedule is flexible. River levels, weather, campsites, and other conditions may influence our daily plans.

Write Your Own Story

Daily Writing With Sean Prentiss

Each day on the river, Sean will lead an approximately one-hour writing session.

These aren’t writing classes where you have to worry about grades, grammar, or getting it “right.”

They’re invitations to pay attention.

You might be encouraged to write about something you see, a memory that surfaces unexpectedly, a person who has shaped your life, a sound you’ve never really noticed before, or what it feels like to be somewhere completely removed from your normal routine.

Writing prompts may include:

  • Nature and observation.
  • Personal memories.
  • People and places that have shaped us.
  • Adventure and uncertainty.
  • Solitude.
  • The idea of home.
  • The changing landscape.
  • The stories we carry with us.
  • What we notice when we finally slow down.

You can write privately or participate in group discussion.

There is no experience required, and you never have to share anything you don’t want to.

The goal is simply to notice more and give yourself time to put some of those thoughts into words.

Stories After Dark

Evenings With Sean

After dinner, we’ll gather together for approximately 30 minutes to an hour of stories and conversation with Sean.

Evening programs may touch on Edward Abbey, Finding Abbey, the history and character of the American West, wilderness, writing, adventure, and Sean’s own experiences as a writer.

There may be laughter.

There may be good questions.

There may be stories you’ve never heard before.

And there will hopefully be a few moments when everyone simply looks around and realizes how lucky we are to be sitting together in the middle of canyon country.

Unplug & Look Around

One of the most memorable parts of a river trip is what you don’t have.

There is generally no cell service and no electricity along the river.

For a few days, the usual notifications, emails, schedules, and demands of everyday life can wait.

Instead, you get the river.

You get the canyon.

You get sunsets.

You get stars.

You get conversation.

And you get time.

We encourage guests to embrace the opportunity to disconnect from technology and be present in the experience.

If you have a medical device that requires electricity or have a specific need to communicate with someone at home, please contact the Tour West office before your trip. Our guides carry emergency communication equipment, and we will discuss what options may be available for your individual needs.

In the event of a serious emergency, evacuation from the river may involve a rescue boat, helicopter, or other appropriate means depending on the circumstances.

Desert Weather

Come Prepared for Change

Desert weather doesn’t always follow the forecast.

A warm, sunny day can change quickly, and rain or thunderstorms can develop with little warning.

Temperatures can also vary considerably between daytime and nighttime.

Your packing list is designed to help you prepare for these changes. Bringing the recommended layers and rain protection will help keep you comfortable when Mother Nature decides to change the plan.

Wildlife

Keep Your Eyes Open

Canyonlands is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, and you never know what might appear around the next bend.

Possible sightings include:

Birds

  • Golden eagles.
  • Peregrine falcons.
  • Canyon wrens.
  • Ravens.
  • Screech owls.
  • Other desert and river birds.

Mammals

  • Desert bighorn sheep.
  • Deer.
  • Beavers.
  • Smaller desert animals.
  • Black Bears (rare but we have seen a few)

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but part of the fun is learning to look—and listen.

If insects tend to bother you, consider bringing lightweight long sleeves and pants, insect repellent, and a head net.

Your Role as a Guest

Before the trip, please:

  • Complete required Tour West registration forms.
  • Sign the required liability waiver
  • Review the Tour West packing information.
  • Tell us about dietary restrictions and food allergies.
  • Let us know about medical needs
  • Bring the personal gear listed on the packing list.
  • Follow the safety instructions provided by our guides.
  • Respect other guests.
  • Respect the natural and cultural resources of the parks and river corridor.
  • Be willing to pitch in around camp.
  • Come ready for changing weather and wilderness conditions.

And most importantly:

Be present.

Put your phone away.

Look up.

Listen.

Write something down.

Talk to someone you’ve never met.

Watch the sunset.

Let the river set the pace for a few days.

The River

Sometimes Peaceful. Sometimes Exciting.

The Colorado River can offer a little bit of everything.

There will be stretches when the water moves quietly and the canyon seems almost completely still.

And then there are the rapids.

River conditions change throughout the season, and the experience can vary from one trip to another.

Our professional Tour West guides will make decisions about navigation, campsites, daily activities, and river travel based on current conditions and safety.

Your job is to enjoy the ride.

Camp Life

Life at River Level

Each evening, we’ll make camp along the river.

Camping in Cataract Canyon is comfortable, but it is intentionally simple. There are no hotel rooms, no restaurants, and no room service.

Instead, you’ll have a front-row seat to the canyon.

Everyone contributes to the daily rhythm of camp. Guests may be asked to help with things such as:

  • Setting up and breaking down camp.
  • Loading and unloading gear.
  • Helping organize shared equipment.
  • Assisting with meals.
  • Cleaning up after meals.
  • Helping fellow guests when needed.

These small jobs are part of what makes river trips special.

You arrive as a group of individuals.

You leave as a group that has shared something together.

Food & Water

Good Food in the Great Outdoors

Tour West provides meals, snacks, and drinks during the river portion of the trip.

We work hard to provide food that is both satisfying and appropriate for an active day outdoors.

We can accommodate many dietary needs, including:

  • Vegetarian.
  • Gluten-free.
  • Dairy-free.
  • Paleo.

Please let us know about dietary restrictions, food allergies, or other special requirements before your trip.

We will also provide meals and snacks during our Arches National Park day.

Because the Colorado River can be extremely muddy, portable water filters generally aren’t practical for producing drinking water. Tour West will bring the drinking water necessary for the river portion of the trip.

What to Bring

Pack for Adventure

The right gear makes a big difference on a river trip.

Before departure, you’ll receive Tour West’s packing information with recommendations for clothing, footwear, personal items, sleeping gear, sun protection, and other essentials.

Because weather can change quickly, we recommend paying particular attention to the clothing layers and rain protection listed in the packing information.

You’ll want to pack thoughtfully—but you don’t need to bring your entire house.

A full packing list will be provided after booking.

The Canyon

A Landscape That Keeps Changing

Cataract Canyon is a place where the scenery can feel almost overwhelming.

Towering walls rise above the river. Layers of rock reveal millions of years of geological history. Side canyons disappear into the desert. Light changes throughout the day, constantly revealing something different.

You may see evidence of people who lived in and traveled through these landscapes thousands of years ago.

You’ll see places that feel enormous.

And you’ll discover quiet corners that feel surprisingly intimate.

At night, the canyon becomes a completely different place.

With little artificial light around you, the stars can be spectacular.

Be Part of the Group

The Best Trips Are Shared

A river trip works best when everyone participates.

You may begin the week traveling with people you’ve never met.

By the time you leave, you’ll have shared meals, rapids, sunsets, stories, writing exercises, camp chores, laughter, and four nights beneath the canyon walls.

You don’t need to be an experienced camper.

You don’t need to be a writer.

You don’t need to know anyone when you arrive.

Come with an open mind and a willingness to participate.

Why This Trip is Different

The Writers River Trip isn’t designed to turn your vacation into a classroom.

It’s designed to give you a different way of experiencing the canyon.

Adventure will still be a big part of it.

So will good food, beautiful scenery, comfortable camps, laughter, and whitewater.

But we’ll also make room for quiet.

For stories.

For creativity.

For curiosity.

For reflection.

For the unexpected memories that tend to become the stories we tell years later.

  • Four nights on the river.
  • A half day in Arches National Park.
  • Stories from Sean Prentiss.
  • A little writing.
  • A lot of canyon.

And the chance to experience the Southwest in a way you may never have experienced it before.

Come for the adventure.

Stay for the stories.

Leave with a few of your own.
